J2: How food can cross-culture

2nd Week in Bali

Sarah-Kay Coulter

Kai is the way our whānau communicate. We show love, appreciation, connection and community through food and one of our immersion opportunities with Manapou ki te Ao | Education New Zealand was to learn more about traditional Indonesian cooking as it is part of us, our mokopuna involved in the work of the wharekai since birth!

Early on in our adventure we asked Plataran Canggu Bali if they would provide us a local market tour and cooking class to learn more Indonesian kai and methods / rituals for food.

This learning we all came away with full tummies and happy hearts as we gained confidence in shopping local and traditional morning markets, learning more about the colourful fruits, ways to barter, natural dyes for food and the genuine hospitality and want to share tradition. We also had the treat of learning how to play the rindik(a traditional Indonesian instrument) and the belief that through a shared love of food we cross the borders of culture.
