100 Acres
The Erana Kaunga Tuhura Whānua Trust principal hapū is Te Aowera and there are blocks that have been handed down through the generations near the marae.
One place of significance is near Port Awanui - a sacred spot that has passed from one family to the next near the most eastern part of Aotearoa, New Zealand.
This is a significant block that is entrusted to the Erana Kaunga Tuhura Whānua Trust to both protect and maintain, including responsibilities to the moana nearby (with river outlets) and the Waiapu River. The block has 4 hectares of flat land and the remaining 36 Hectares are abundant in kanuka and manuka and rich indigenous biodiversity. Currently the Trust is working with the hapū, local businesses and others to support understanding this block as its tree species have a particularly high-triketone chemotype and is active in seeking a grant to investigate their antibacterial and medicinal benefit.
